MATRONS STORY – By @anniecoops

Matron was ‘old school’ but in truth no one really knew how old she was; she had the kind of face that you knew had seen things but what was another question.
Matron trained in the early 1980s but she wasn’t young even then; in fact she had had a former life before she decided to become a nurse.  This period was what she referred to as her ‘hippy’ phase, a time when she can remember with vivid swirling colours; it was a time of sandals and cheese cloth and patchouli oil mixed with the sound of the Beatles and Jefferson Airplane.  If Matron closes her eyes she can still hear ‘I am the Walrus, goo goo g'joob’ in her head, the warmth of sun on her skin and the heady smell of Tweed perfume.
That’s when she met him. He was a policeman then. She can’t quite remember the circumstances but it was something to do with trying to evict them from a squat and when she saw him she knew.  Her life changed forever.
He was newly married then and had a big career to look forward to and over time his job became more and more secret.  He had to spend time in strange cities and Matron often would secretly meet him there.  Gone were the hippy clothes and a more moderate woman emerged. Now, of course, she is meeting an important man, a man who has power and influence in the halls of Whitehall.  They can no longer meet in public and their rendezvous are secret but the passion has never diminished.  Matron may be all Laura Ashley on the outside but underneath she is all Ann Summers.
Her nursing career also came out of love; she nursed an old aunt and decided after this, despite the sizable inheritance the aunt left her, that nursing was important, vital in fact.  She trained in a large well-known London hospital and loved every second of it.  Of course the nurses’ home proved to be a perfect meeting place for a senior police officer so long as he didn’t mind shinning up and down the drain pipes and climbing in through her room window – somehow it just added to the secret nature of their enduring relationship.
Matron loved the patients and the care she could give.  She was a great nurse and the patients loved her as did the senior staff.  She was reliable and caring.  She remembers the good old days on the wards at Christmas when Mr Fitch, the hospital surgeon would come and carve the turkey on the ward.  He had asked Matron out many times when she was a ward sister.  In fact she went once but she was worried what he would think when he realised that everything on the surface was not the same as underneath – Matron’s waters run deep.
Matron ended up as senior Matron at St Tweeters Trust.  She wasn’t sure she liked things these days.  Gone was the consultants’ dining room and the staff had such a lot ‘off’ these days she could hardly keep up – she was always of the suspicion that they were one step ahead of her.  Matron’s long term plans were unclear – she had no family, the nearest were the people at St Twitters.  They were kind to her, even if sometimes they took the mickey out of her behind her back.
So Matron puts on her uniform every day and troops off to her office, wearing her Channel (it was at least a luxury she could now afford) and looking forward to those special secret days off, in anonymous hotel rooms wherever things took them.

Old B (A Nest Ward #StTwitters Patient) @BartonTD

Was the last surviving member of 12 brothers. Born in the Cleethorpes he had as a young man joined the Merchant Navy and sailed the seas from pole to pole, enjoying the exotic perfumes of the Far East, and a girl in every port. It was at this time that he developed his life long relationship with strong liquor and a pipe full of rough Shag.

However it was in Shanghai that he met the love of his life – the Slant Eyed Chinese Maiden by the name of Hooflungshite. HooFlung and Old B fell madly in love and eloped, taking an old Tramp Steamer from Shanghai to Swansea.

Here they settled, Old B running his own Hardware Shop with HooFlung at his side. They had a family of 5, 2 daughters and 3 sons and the family grew & flourished. Eventually the children took over the family business, franchised it under the brand of B&Q with fiscal interests in the Old Scroggs Distillery and Rough Shag Tobacco International. .

Old B and Hooflung grew happily to retirement as the family business flourished.  When Hooflung sadly passed in a freak skiing accident Old B became increasingly reclusive – his health deteriorating in terms of lung function, liver function with just a flavour of peripheral vascular disease. His children, whilst supportive of him, made significant donations to the #StTwitters Trust Fund C/O the Efficiency Office #effoff to ensure his future care and hygiene.

EN Cheryl ....she really was #theonlyENinthevillage @Cherylwilson2

EN Cheryl prided herself on being the only Enrolled Nurse at the world famous Hospital that is, St Twitters!

EN Cheryl had many years of experience when she found herself in receipt of a letter with the infamous #StTweeters Trust letterhead offering her a full time post on Nest Ward!
En Cheryl, although rather confused, at the letter, as she had never actually applied for a post or attended interview , gave immediate resignation, polished her prize Bronze Buckle, packed her highly trendy trundle case and headed for the train station!
Once aboard the train from the rather mysterious Twitter Platform she found a seat and settled with the latest edition of Nurses Weekly! The "Cover Girl" this week was someone EN Cheryl had aspirations of becoming at some point in her future career. The model was a picture of calm and collection and even more striking was the much longed for, and up to the minute fashion item she wore with such style, the Laura Ashley Blouse! This was the one and only "Matron of St Twitters"! EN Cheryl smiled as she caught up with Matrons Story, and she was duly inspired to work hard to even be noticed by such a Nursing Icon who appeared timeless and full of knowledge and know how!
Reading completed EN Cheryl indulged in a cup of tea served from a china cup, how perfectly marvellous She remembered part of the St Twitters motto ..... “Excellence in Care” , even for the Staff it appeared . She caught the eye of another passenger, EN Cheryl wasn't quite sure what this person was doing really, she appeared to be busy with a sort of modern version of the typewriter but seemed friendly as she immediately smiled and said hello !  She introduced herself as SN Chinn @agencynurse, she was going back to St Twitters following attending something EN Cheryl had never heard of before...." a Tweet up " ! EN Cheryl really liked SN Chinn who was also based on Nest Ward and said she would show her the ropes, the biscuit stash and most importantly the sluice!  SN Chinn was amazed with EN Cheryl swishy cape so they made a deal that if they worked opposite shifts they would share it.
EN Cheryl reported duly to Matrons office on arrival! She very much wanted her autograph for her Nurses Weekly but was so in awe once in her presence and blinded by the whiteness of her Laura Ashley blouse, the thought was lost. EN Cheryl knew from that moment on she fully intended to make Matron at St Twitters no matter how long it would take!
EN Cheryl was told quite clearly she would work under Sister and the Staff Nurses, SN Chinn and SN Sally @nursemaiden ( who had tights to die for from Marks and Sparkles) and occasionally SN Gareth @Bartontd, who like EN Cheryl , was Welsh....#cymruambyth !! They always worked together, however, when the Rugby was on and lapsed into cymraeg especially when they wanted to swap shifts and mess up the off duty :)
EN Cheryl was quite content to be the patients nurse and the fact she "would never be in charge as an EN" was great ! It meant she was able to pop off down the lab or the Admin Offices on errands! Luckily for EN Cheryl A& E was en route to everywhere as she "took a fancy" to the wonderfully talented, and very handsome, Dr Nick!
EN Cheryl could on occasion be found having an illegal try of Matrons chair......!
