Senior Matrons Open Letter to the Nursing Times
A Plea for a Return to Traditional Uniforms
Dear Editor – The Nursing Times
As the Senior Matron of St Twitters Hospital I have been
compelled to draw my Nurses attention to the sloppy Uniform standards I have
observed in our younger Nurses. You may be aware that St Tweeters Trust seeks
to provide a gold standard for professional practice that may adopted
throughout the NHS without the need for these non professional “commissioners”
that are springing up everywhere. As Senior Matron of St Twitters I holds dear
the doctrines of our Patron Saint Sister Angela Plume, I am clear that only a Professional Female Nurse
may understand the standards to be expected from the young women in Nursing. It
is we, not the patients, government or the upstarts at the NMC who must set the
standards that we should expect amongst our fresh faced nurses – and this
starts first and foremost with a smart neat uniform. We exhort the Nursing
Times to start a campaign to rid our profession of American Operating Theatre 2 Piece
Dungarees and return to the smart Uniforms of the past, with proper lace cuffs
and starched aprons. Remember – it is the Welfare of Our Patients that is at
Stake.
The Senior Matron
